Lady Cards Season comes to an end

February 27, 2011
By Stuart Earp of East Wilkes High School

Ronda - The Lady Cards ended the season Friday night as they lost against Reigning state champs Bishop McGuinness Villains. But the Cards didn't let them win easy.

East Wilkes came out aggressive and led by a point after one quarter. Bishop moved ahead 26-22 by halftime and held a slim 38-33 edge heading into the final eight minutes.

The Cardinals just struggled to make shots and defensive stops in key situations. East swished only one three-pointer all night (after burying six on Wednesday against Albemarle). They also missed 15 free throws, including 11 in the final half. Bishop closed the game on a 19-5 run.

The Cards advanced back to the third round of the state playoffs for the second year in a row - and for the third time since 2007. East lost its season opener at home to North Stokes but won every other home game until Friday night - including a state playoff win against North Stokes this past Monday night.

The team will graduate four seniors - Parks, Diorio, Kendra Green and Chelsey Smith. All four played valuable minutes all winter.

Bishop McGuinness    12    14    12    19    - 57
East Wilkes                  13      9    11      5    - 38
