Lady Cards tell Lady Rams - Not in Our House!

February 9, 2011
East Wilkes High School

Ronda, NC - East Wilkes Lady Cardinals played a close match game with the Starmount Lady Rams, unlike their last meeting @ Starmount when East won by 37.

The Cardinals held Starmounts Kelli Bonner to 0 points in the 1st half. With the score tied most of the way the Cards finally pulled away with some help of some terrific outside shooting.

The third quarter proved close throughout, though East Wilkes never let Starmount get a lead. Bonner hit her first shot of the game in that quarter but still only had two points heading into the final period.

Becca Aplin's third three-pointer of the game pulled the Rams within 38-35 with 6:34 left in the contest. But East's Shina Parks answered on the other end, draining a three from the top of the key. Parks then made a steal and fed Erin Royal on the fast break. Royal missed her shot but hit two free throws for a 43-35 advantage.

Bonner drained a pair of her patented step-back three-pointers to make it a three-point game again, 44-41, with 1:48 to play.

But once again Parks, who was battling some wrist soreness, came to the rescue for the Cardinals. Ashley Hayes grabbed a rebound off an East Wilkes miss, then the ball found its way back to Parks, who drained a three-pointer with 1:27 to play.

That made the score 47-41.

East Wilkes used a variety of players to defend Bonner, like Parks, Shanisha White and others. The Cardinals forced 22 Starmount turnovers.

Samantha Adams led the Cardinals on the offensive end, earning 15 points. She had eight points during the third period. Royal finished with eight points. White, Parks and Brittany Diorio each had six points, while Kendra Green chipped in five points. A pair of buckets from Diamond Hayes (four points) and one by Chelsey Smith (two points) rounded out the East Wilkes scoring.
