To steal a term from another spring sport, the East Ridge girls lacrosse team started out batting a thousand.

East Ridge, which has its own girls lacrosse team for the first time ever this year, began things with a 10-9 win at Irondale on Monday, April 9, in the season opener.

East Ridge sophomore Sam Hammer scored the game-winning goal against Irondale to make the game 10-9. In the match, East Ridge took a 7-4 lead in the game then held on for the historic win.

“For a first-year team, we have a lot to be excited about, but we have to take it one piece at a time – one practice, one game,” East Ridge head coach Amy Fortney said.

After beating Irondale, East Ridge ended up on the wrong side of another one-goal game, falling 10-9 at Rosemount on Tuesday, April 10, but rebounded with a second victory, 13-7 against Eagan on Wednesday, April 11, at the Raptors’ Nest.

“We have shown a lot of heart in the first few games, and that is something that can’t be coached, it has to come from within,” Fortney said. “With that, we can build something really special here.”

In the first three games, freshman goaltender Cara Kaufer totaled 33 saves and sophomore midfielder Jenna Griffith scored a team-high seven goals.

Next, East Ridge is at Forest Lake on Wednesday, before playing host to Hastings next Monday at East Ridge in a pair of Suburban East Conference contests.

“We take each opponent one game at a time and enjoy learning from playing some great teams that have had a lot of success,” Fortney said. “Playing against these teams will only make us better. There is a lot of great lacrosse being played in Minnesota and we hope to just do our part to grow the game.”
