Home » Football NewsVYPE Playmakers for December -- Sponsored by the MarinesDecember 28, 2011 By Matt Malatesta of VYPE MAGAZINE - East HoustonColdspring running back Sherman Gilbert has wiggled his way into VYPE Magazine as one of the top rushers in the Greater Houston area. While Class 3A Coldspring is a sleepy town near Lake Livingston, Gilbert's success can't go unnoticed. He led the Trojans to the state final game a year ago and has hopes of returning with the hardware this December. He has rushed for over 2,200 yards and 35 touchdowns. The brother of Oklahoma State kick returner Justin Gilbert, Sherman's recruitment is starting to pick up.
Cy Woods' Craig Nowak shocked even himself this December. The senior qualified for the Nike Nationals in Oregon and finished third overall. "I was so happy coming across that finish line and a little shocked. I felt like I could compete at that level, but it's a whole different story when it becomes reality. I feel extremely blessed to see my running come this far." Nowak won the Foot Locker Regionals in North Carolina and participated in the nationals in California.
While he's not tall in stature and doesn't receive much hype, Manvel quarterback Shane McCarley has been making big plays for the Mavs on the state playoff run. Splitting time with Julian Walker at quarterback, McCarley is more of a traditional drop back passer, having thrown for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Walker, his quarterback-mate, has also played well with over 1,500 yards passing and 700 yards rushing.
Hightower running back Josh Wilhite has never really been healthy over the past two seasons. Last year he suffered a season-ending knee injury and he's fought through injuries again this season. But he's been good enough to complement quarterback Bralon Addison in the Hurricane backfield to give defensive coordinators fits. He's rushed for over 1,000 yards and has helped lead Hightower deep into the playoffs after going 0-2 to begin the season.
Seven Lakes' hooper Christen Inman is considered one of the top 2013 recruits in the country with her slashing style of play. She's carving up opposing defenses this preseason, averaging over 20 points per game for a talented Spartan team. Inman should be the District 19-5A MVP this season as Seven Lakes is the odds-on favorite to win the conference.
