It looked as though North Shore was just a step behind. And for anyone who was present at Alvin Memorial Stadium last Friday for the North Shore/Manvel game, which seemed to be the case.
At one time, the score was 28-7 and it looked like the Mavericks were going to cruise to victory. But play by play, the Manvel lead shrunk. And by the third quarter, it was gone. It was the second half when North Shore ramped up the energy, concentration and over all game play. That led to the eventual final score of 56-28.
“First of all, we turned the ball over twice inside the 10 (yard line). Strange things were happening and we were not playing as physical as hard as our trait, our character,” North Shore coach David Aymond. “We needed to quit scoreboard watching and get after it.”
And they answered that call.
Out of the gate, the Mustangs upped their energy on the offensive and defensive lines and started to push Manvel back. Couple that with Manvel “running out of gas (words of coach Kirk Martin),” and the Mustangs just took over.
“That’s what we are about. They believed in themselves and we have great team chemistry,” Aymond said of the team’s physical nature and cohesiveness. “Of course, we don’t need all of the drama to go with it. Let’s just take care of it from the get-go.”
