At Baytown Lee, coach Marvin Sedberry Jr. is about to see his first group of freshman complete their four years in the program under his direction.
For him, that is worthy of mentioning.
“This will be my first class of seniors. These kids know what is going on and know the system,” Sedberry Jr. said. “They know what the expectations are and we are excited about that.”
Now going forward, at least in the short term, the first goal is likely getting into the postseason. After a 4-6 finish in 2011, that left a bad taste in the mouths of all involved with Lee. The team had all the pieces in place, but fell short.
One of the key factors was injuries.
“Our biggest thing moving forward is that we have to stay healthy. We have been hit with the injury bug for the past couple of years,” Sedberry Jr. said. “Aside from that, we should be okay. But we must continue to do the little things right.”
The little things. That comes up plenty in the world of sports, and society as a whole. The mantra is that when you pay attention to the details, that great things will happen for you.
That is what is being taught at Lee now, and for years past.
“I tell my guys all the time that our backs are against the wall. With our (enrollment) numbers lower, we have to do everything right,” Sedberry Jr. said. “We can’t have the penalties and turnovers and we have to execute well in all phases of the game.
“We are working to make sure our players are fundamentally sound. These players have been on varsity for 2-3 years. We are excited to get them back on the field.”
