Wright Christian Academy Volleyball Tops in State
October 24, 2011By VYPE Oklahoma of VYPE MAGAZINE - Oklahoma
It had been a good season for the 8th grade volleyball team only losing to Lincoln Christian (5A) and the JV team from Mingo Valley in regular season matches and Community Christian and Life Christian in tournament play early in the season.
After finishing 3rd place in the WCA 8th Grade Tournament in September, the players had their hearts set on redeeming themselves at state. On Saturday October 1, the team made their way to Del City early in the morning to compete at Destiny Christian. After going undefeated in pool play against Destiny Christian, Summit Christian, and Southwest Covenant, they were matched up with Mingo Valley in the Quarterfinals. After beating Mingo Valley, they took on Regent Preparatory in the Semifinals and beat them in two games.
That set up a meeting with Southwest Covenant for a second time, the players knew they had to earn this match. Going into the final game confident, the 8th grade team beat Southwest Covenant 25-20, 25-15 to clinch the state title. Their serving and hitting was tough that day coming together in a winning combination. This is the first time coach Bowers has won State for middle school since she began coaching at WCA in 2004.
Congratulations to coach Bowers, coach Smith, and 8th graders: Makenzy Coulson, Ashley Poole, Savannah Graves, Kaitlynn Carter, Brittney Rose, Marissa Moore, and Nicole Blessing along with 7th graders: Rachel Lobaugh, Kjirsten Brown, and Hannah Otten.
Congratulations to 7th graders Kjirsten Brown and Rachel Lobaugh for clinching 2 of the 8 all tournament spots at State. The Wright Christian Academy Wildcats 8th grade team finished with a season record of 16-4.
