Eastern Alamance used a strong defensive performance to overcome a sluggish offense on the way to a 21-3 victory over rival Western Alamance.
Neither team gained a first down in the opening quarter, and the only score of the first half came after a Warrior turn over inside their own five yard line. After an Elliot Powell punt pinned Western deep in their own territory the Eagles defense stripped the Warrior running back and recovered the fumble to set up the offense in great field position. The offense was stopped for three straight plays, but on fourth down Elliot Powell took a sweep to the right side and cut back through the middle for the one yard touchdown.
Both defenses held strong for the rest of the half and neither team threatend to score.
Eastern Alamance finally found some breathing room late in the third quarter when Lamar Ivey hit tight end Dylan Hair and Hair shook off three Warrior defenders to race for the 42 yard touchdown. The only other Eastern Alamance score came on a fake punt in the third quarter when Elliot Powell raced down the right side of the field for the 38 yard score.
The Eagles defense held the Warriors in check most of the night and only allowed 159 total yards of offense. The only scoring of the night for Western Alamance was a 36 yard field goal from kicker Kevin Lewis. The Warriors recovered an onside kick after the field goal, but could not score again.
Eastern Alamance will host the Morehead Panthers next Friday night for Homecoming 2009.
