Home » Baseball NewsEagles down Nighthawks to move back into tie for firstMarch 31, 2012 By Calvin Walters of Eastern Alamance High SchoolNick Monroe threw six innings, allowing two unearned runs, and the Eagles used a five run fifth inning on the way to the 6-2 victory Friday night. Monroe opened the scoring in the first inning with a double, plating Cody Curry who opened the game with a walk. It was the only opportunity the Nighthawks allowed the senior, as Northern choose to intenionnally walk the UNCW committ his next three at bats. Two errors, one in the third on a fly ball to left field, and one at third in the fourth allowed the Nighthawks their only runs of the game. South Carolina committ DC Arendas had two hits off Monroe, but scored only once on the error in the third inning. After falling behind heading into the fifth the Eagles responded with some help from Northern Guilford. Phillip Martin reached on an error and JT Kirby drew a walk. After Martin was forced out at third on a bunt attempt, Zack Littell singled to right and the Nighthawk fielder misplayed the ball allowing Kirby and Curry to score. After intenionally walking Monroe another error on a pickoff attempt allowed another run to score. Mike Waters drew another walk to load the bases and a Ridge Eaton infield hit scored another Eagle run. Kyle Edwards followed with another infield single and another error pushed the lead to 6-2. After the first two Nighthawks reached base in the seventh, Littell came in to close the game out. The junior made short order of the heart of the Nighthawks lineup striking out all three batters he faced. With the victory EA improves to 9-3 on the season and 5-2 in conference, tied for first with Williams and McMichael.
