June 16, 2011Des Moines Area Community College - Boone Campus
The pipeline to Major League Baseball from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is continuing.
A pitcher from DMACC’s fourth-place 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series team and a former DMACC pitcher, now this Wichita State University (WSU) both were drafted in the recent Major League Baseball draft.
The Chicago Cubs in the 41st round of the recent Major League Baseball Draft selected Austin Urban of Johnston, Penn., a freshman on the DMACC baseball team.
The Detroit Tigers in the 25th round selected Mitch Mormon of Manchester, Iowa, who played baseball at DMACC in 2008 and 2009. Mormann is a senior at WSU.
“It’s the fourth year in a row that we’ve had guys drafted,” DMACC baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “I feel good about the consistency with which we are producing prospects.”
Urban was 6-4 with a 3.80 earned run average for DMACC in 2011. He started 15 games and pitched two complete games. Urban worked 73 1/3 innings, allowing 62 hits and 45 runs, 31 of which were earned. He struck out 90 batters and walked 42. Opposing hitters batted .224 against Urban.
“He’s a great kid and we’re happy that he’s getting the recognition,” Fitzgerald said, adding that he expects Urban to return to DMACC next season, but that the decision will be Urban’s to make.
Mormann pitched for Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2010 and then transferred to WSU. He sat out the 2011 season as a redshirt. Mormann was 3-0 with a 5.97 with LSU. He threw 28 2/3 innings, all in relief, and struck out 18 batters.
“We’re happy for Mitch,” Fitzgerald said. “He has a decision to make abut signing with the Tigers or returning for his senior season.”
