DMACC BASEBALL PLAYER BLAKE SCHMIT NAMED NJCAA DIVISION II DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) freshman Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., the NJCAA Division II Defensive Player of the Year.

Schmit, a shortstop, compiled a .976 fielding percentage and committed just four errors in 2011. He finished the season with 106 assists and 55 putouts and participated in 23 double plays.

At the plate, Schmit hit .347. He had 51 hits, including 12 doubles, a triple and a home run, and drove in 25 runs. Schmit stole seven bases and had a .393 on-base percentage.

In addition to being named the NJCAA Division II Defensive Player of the Year, Schmit earned 2011 NJCAA Division II Rawlings Gold Glove Honors. The Rawlings Golf Glove Award is the benchmark for excellence and performance on the diamond in Major League Baseball. In 2007, the award began to also symbolize the best of the best at the collegiate and high school levels.
