DMACC BASEBALL PLAYERS EARN POSTSEASON HONORS

Several members of the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball teams have earned postseason honors for their performances during the regular season and in district and conference play.

Freshmen Gabby De Varona of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Hebraim Cordova of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and Alec Crawford of Wilton were named to the North Plains District All-District Team.

De Varona, Cordova and Crawford were also named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Conference Team along with freshmen Colin Keefe of Woodbury, Minn.

Freshman Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., was named to the all-conference second team and was also named defensive player of the year.

Joining Schmit on the all-conference second team were sophomores Sean Borman of Minnetonka, Minn., and John Loeffler of Burnsville, Minn., and freshman Brandon Peterson of Savage, Minn.

Freshman Sean Moore of Coralville and sophomores Greg Larpenter of Urbandale, Ryan Torgerson of Johnston and Drew Freie of Wilton received honorable mention recognition

De Varona, a first baseman, hit .318 during the regular season. He led the Bears in home runs with 17 and in runs batted in with 56.

Cordova, a center fielder, was DMACC's leading hitter during the regular season with a .384 average. He led the team in hits with 73 and in runs scored with 51. He hit eight home runs and drove in 44 runs.

Crawford, a pitcher, was 9-2 during the season with a 1.96 earned run average. He struck out 75 batters and walked 15.

Keefe, a catcher, batted .376 during the regular season and Schmit compiled a .354


batting average. Schmit had a .978 fielding percentage with only four errors in 181 fielding chances. He had 60 putouts and 117 assists.


Borman, a third baseman, hit .352 with seven home runs, 50 RBIs and 50 runs scored. Loeffler, an outfielder, batted .328 with six home runs, 44 RBIs and 47 runs scored.

Peterson led the DMACC staff with six saves. He was 5-1 for the season with a 3.41 ERA and struck out 46 batters in 34 and a third innings.

Moore, a second baseman and Larpenter, an outfielder, batted .306 and .296 respectively. Moore hit six home runs and drove in 47 runs and Larpenter drove in 30 runs and scored 48 times.

Torgerson and Freie were mainstays on the DMACC staff. Torgerson was 9-4 with a 3.51 ERA and Freie was 4-2 with a 2.28 ERA.
