DMACC Baseball Team Wins ICCAC Title; Earns No. 1 Seed in Region XI

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team won three of four games against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on May 7 and 8 to clinch its fourth consecutive Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division II championship.

The Bears also earned the No. 1 seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Baseball Tournament, which will be played May 12-15 in Waterloo.

The three wins against ILCC allowed DMACC to close the regular season at 40-16 overall and 17-7 in ICCAC Division II. Southeastern Community College (SECC) also finished conference play with a 17-7 record. The Bears and SECC split their four-game series during the regular season, but DMACC earned the No. 1 seed in the Region XI tournament because it won three of four games against third-place finisher Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). SECC and ICCC split their four-game series.

DMACC took both ends of a doubleheader against ILCC on May 7, winning by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. ILCC took the first game on May 8, 3-2, but the Bears bounced back to win the nightcap, 10-2.

Sophomore Greg Larpenter of Urbandale hit a two-run single in the second inning and added a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning to lead the Bears past ILCC, 6-1, in the first game on May 7. Freshman Gabby De Varona of Pembrooke Pines, Fla., also had a pair of hits in the game and sophomore Sean Borman of Minnetonka, Minn., and freshman Alex Lashomb of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., drove in one run apiece.

Sophomore Ryan Torgerson of Johnston went all seven innings to improve to 7-4. He allowed five hits and struck out three to improve to 7-4 for the season.

Freshman Collin Keefe of Woodbury, Minn., and Larpenter drove in one run apiece in the top of the eighth inning to lift DMACC to a 6-4 win in the second game on May 7. DMACC grabbed a 4-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three in the second, but ILCC knotted the score at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and one each in the third and sixth innings.

Sophomore John Loeffler of Burnsville, Minn., drove in three DMACC runs with a bases-loaded double in the second inning. De Varona also drove in a run for the Bears. Freshman Hebraim Cordova of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, and Blake Schmit of Eden Prairie, Minn., had two hits each in the game.

Freshman Brandon Peterson of Savage, Minn., improved to 4-0 with the win. Peterson relieved freshman Alec Crawford of Wilton in the bottom of the seventh and pitched the last two innings. He allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one.

ILCC scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 decision in the first game on May 8. DMACC took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Lakers took advantage of four hits in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the win.

Cordova had two hits for the Bears and freshman Sean Moore of Coralville drove in a run.

Peterson suffered the loss, his first of the season, after relieving freshman Austin Urban of Johnstown, Penn., with one out in the seventh inning. Peterson allowed two runs on a pair of base hits. Urban, who worked six innings, allowed one run on three hits, struck out six and walked six.

Borman and Moore had three hits apiece and Borman and Cordova drove in three runs each to lead DMACC to a 10-2 win in the second game on May 8. Borman had an RBI single in the first, an RBI double in the third and a solo home run in the fifth. Cordova had a run-scoring single in the fourth and a two-run single in the seventh.

Sophomore Drew Freie of Wilton went the distance to improve to 4-2 for the season, He allowed two runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked two.

DMACC will face either Kirkwood Community College (KCC) or North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) at 7 p.m. May 13 in the Region XI Tournament. The tournament is being played at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.
