It’s A Game, Know the Rules!
On February 11th, former Chicago Bear Doug Plank, representing Recruiting Realties spoke to over 70 parents and athletes in the Dixon High School Auditorium. This was an educational program for student-athletes and their families put on by Jon Empen, Activity Director at Dixon High School.
This was the first time that a presentation was given regarding the recruiting process. The focus of his presentation was geared to the student-athlete who is interested in playing sports after high school. Mr. Plank provided great insight in a very dynamic and entertaining way by talking about athletics beyond high school. The value of academics in high school and college, the ever changing NCAA guidelines and standards, the role of the coach and parent in the recruiting process were just a few of the topics he discussed.
Three areas that were stressed:
1- You don’t always get to pick the college, they sometimes pick you.
2- A college can’t recruit you if he/she doesn’t know who you are. Student athletes need to market themselves, and work with their high school in seeking guidance on colleges they should look at.
3- Don’t get hung up on words ‘athletic scholarship’. Focus on “funding” comprised of academic money, merit money, grants, endowment and achievement money.
Mr. Plank’s main message was the importance of getting an education. The sole focus cannot be about hitting the ball, kicking the ball, or throwing the ball, but about finding the right match for both academics and athletics.
All those that attended received valuable information, and Mr. Plank stayed around to answer any questions that parents or athletes had.
Mr. Empen has four of Mr. Plank’s books available for checkout. If you are interested in checking these books out, please see Mr. Empen in the activities office.
