DHC Cruises to Victory Over Rose
April 7, 2014D H Conley High School
D.H. Conley maintained its hold on first place in the 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference softball standings with a 19-0 rout of rival J.H. Rose in five innings on Friday.
The Vikings put up three runs in the bottom of the first before a 10-run explosion in the third put the game away.
With the victory, Conley (9-2) improved to 7-0 in league play.
“This was a good game to really work on the things we know we’re struggling with,” DHC coach Wayne Deans said. “Some of it’s been baserunning, and some of it’s been patience in the box and being more efficient defensively. But I think we did a pretty good job tonight.”
The first three batters in the Vikings’ lineup scored in the first with the help of two Rose errors and a two-run single by Makenna Matthijs.
Conley sent 15 batters to the plate in the third inning, getting RBI doubles from Rikki Oeters and Madison Maloney, a two-run double by Danielle Nadeau, Olivia Salamon’s run-scoring single and consecutive RBI triples from Kori Adams and Oeters to build the lead to 13-0.
Erin Fulcher led off the bottom of the fourth with a double for the Vikings before eventually stealing home. Maloney, Matthijs, Kristin Dickens, Julia Allsbrook and Fulcher each added RBI singles in the frame.
Pitchers Rachel Weidner and Caroline Roberson combined on the shutout.
Lindsay Gribble led the Rampants with two of their four hits in the loss.
