DEERFIELD BEACH – Brandon Powell accounted for 144 yards and three touchdowns as host Deerfield Beach scored early and often and dominated Northeast, 37-0 on Friday night.
Powell and Aeron McNeal each scored twice in the first half as the Bucks (1-0) scored on its first three possessions to seize a 21-0 lead.
Deerfield Beach coach Allen Jackson said getting out to the early lead gave his team confidence.
"That was huge because it got them believing in themselves," Jackson said. "That was really important. We wanted to get a jump on them tonight."
Powell scored on a 67-yard TD run on the Bucks' third play from scrimmage to give Deerfield Beach a 6-0 lead. McNeal made it 14-0 with a 1-yard run and Powell extended the lead to 21-0 on the next series as he hauled in a 35-yard scoring toss from Danarious Graham.
The Bucks picked up a safety and added a 12-yard scoring run from McNeal to pad the lead to 30-0 at halftime. Powell, who finished the game with 15 carries for 104 yards, added a 10-yard TD run in the third to push the lead to 37-0 and force a running clock.
If there was one thing that concerned Jackson it was the penalties. The teams combined for 212 yards and the Bucks accounted for 78 in penalties yards.
"It was the first game jitters," Jackson said. "We'll work on that and get that straightened out. We have to tighten up the penalties and little mistakes we made. Defensively, we missed a few tackles and with Blanche Ely next week (Saturday) we have to play a little bit better."
