Deerfield boys win 11-8A district title

DEERFIELD BEACH - Marcus Owens scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Deerfield Beach defeated Douglas 75-50 for he District 11-8A boys basketball championship at Deerfield Beach High School.
Deerfield Beach, which lost in the regional final to Spanish River last season, 67-61, will host Miramar in Thursday's regional quarterfinal.
"We've been working hard the last week, but I was happy with our performance," said fifth-year Bucks coach Kenny Brown. "There were a few things we could have done better, a few technical things."
Deerfield Beach (25-4) jumped out to an early lead at 15-5 on a basket by Ownes with 1:01 remaining in the first quarter and never looked back. Owens scored eight of his 17 points in that periodto get his team off to a fast start.
After visiting Douglas (11-11) closed to within 21-15 on a three-point play by Zachary Miednik with 4:15 remaining in the first half, the Bucks closed out the first half on a 9-2 run, including the last five points of the half to seize a 30-19 halftime lead.
The Bucks opened the second half the way they closed the first as they scored the first six points of the period and eventually pulled away as they went on a 13-0 run keyed by Terence Johnson's 10 points in the third quarter. Johnson and Joshua Huntley each finished with with 16 points. Huntley also pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Bucks led in the second half by as much as 59-32 before the Eagles went on an 11-0 run to pull within 59-43 with 5:10 left in the game. However, they could get no cloer and the Bucks pulled away for their thrid district title in a row.
Douglas was paced by Miednik's game-high 18 points and Gregory Kacprzak's 15 points.
