DEERFIELD BEACH — The trophy presentation was almost anti-climatic.
When the final whistle blew in Deerfield Beach's 3-2 victory against Taravella in Friday night's 11-5A region championship game, Bucks players ripped off their red jerseys and dived onto the muddy field. Minutes later, they lifted coach Frantz Edouard into the air, bouncing him around like a concert crowd surfer, before finally receiving the hardware that came with the win.
"It could have been unexpected, because our guys are not known around as club players, travel players, but we have good players," Edouard said. "Here, it wasn't unexpected at all. We have a great team. We did well the whole season."
Dawing Morinvil scored the Bucks' first two goals and Romilaire Ambroise added the third after the Trojans cut Deerfield Beach's lead to 2-1 on Estaban Alvarado's goal seven minutes into the second half.
"I'm so excited," Morinvil said. "I don't know what to say. I'm very happy. We worked hard."
Deerfield Beach (18-3-1) lost two regular-season games to the Trojans (18-3-2), but its team speed proved too much on Friday. Morinvil got the Bucks on the board with 26:55 to play in the first half, pushing a slow-roller off a breakaway into the left corner of the net.
Morinvil added his second goal seconds after his shot off Victor Enriquez's corner kick from the left side sailed high. The near-miss sent Enriquez to the right corner, and this time, Morinvil, lurking a few yards from the net, got off an on-target shot for a 2-0 Bucks lead with 13:30 to play in the first half.
The Trojans pulled within 2-1 seven minutes into the second half when Alvarado punched in Darwin Espinal's cross, but Ambroise pushed the Bucks' lead back to two goals with 28:25 to play.
Taravella's Jose Alvaro Campuzano curved a free kick from 10 yards out with 15:36 left above the goal, and with 9:45 to play, Espinal's free kick narrowly missed finding the right corner.
The Trojans' best scoring chance game with 5:50 to go, when Bucks goalkeeper George Cunha got one hand on a header from Santiago Perez.
