David Crockett High School freshman Savannah Beals was the lone 4-H member to represent Washington County at the inaugural parade for Gov. Bill Haslam on Jan. 15.

Beals was among approximately 30 members of 4-H to march in the Governor's Parade in Nashville, getting a unique opportunity to be on the front row of state government.

"It was a lot of fun," Beals said. "We waved our Tennessee flags with one hand and waved with the other."

Beals has been a part of 4-H since she was in the fourth grade and currently is a part of the Tennessee 4-H performing arts troupe.

"This parade experience definitely tells me that I need to keep going with 4-H and keep doing things that get me out there," Beals said.

Beals, who is also a member of the Crockett marching and concert bands as well as a part of her school's student council, hopes to one day become a producer in the music business.

The 32 members of 4-H taking part in the parade represented 26 counties from all regions of Tennessee. 4-H is the youth development program for the University of Tennessee Extension. The organization teaches leadership, citizenship and life skills to approximately 300,000 youth in grades 4-12.
