Alumni Season Preview: Cameron Hobson

May 3, 2011
Crawfordsville High School

Entering his junior season at Dayton University, 2008 Crawfordsville graduate Cameron Hobson has both a great deal of success to look back upon and much more to look forward to.

In his CHS career, Hobson racked up the accolades on the hill and with the bat.  His 51 career doubles are third all time in the state of Indiana.  In 2008, he recorded a 0.47 ERA with 126 K's in just 59 innings.  He did so as the ace of an Athenian staff that amassed an incredible 397 strikeouts, good for third most in the state's history and the largest total since 1973.

Hobson also hit a whopping .565 with 8 homeruns in his senior campaign.  In the Regional versus arch rival Brebuf-Jesuit he struck out 11 in a complete game effort.  Just a few days later, Cameron then struck out another 10 in a dominant effort over Greenwood in the Semi-State Final.  One week later, Hobson set a record for most strikeouts in a state championship game with 11, helping the Athenians bring home the hardware.

A number of MLB teams sent scouts to watch Hobson as a prep star, impressed by the lefties' 90 mph-plus fastball.  Narrowly going undrafted, he signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Dayton Flyers.

As a freshman at Dayton, Hobson set a school record for strikeouts with 83, also posting a 7-1 record.  His performance was good enough to garner Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors and a selection as the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year.

In last spring's 2010 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected Hobson in the 37th round on a "draft-and-follow" basis.  Pitching for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League, Cameron pitched 44 1/3 innings with a 2.44 ERA, collecting 27 strikeouts.

Q&A :  Cameron Hobson (Dayton Flyers)

What adjustments or overall improvements are you working on to prepare for the upcoming season?

I've been working since this summer on my pitching delivery and have made quite a few adjustments. I'm hoping that leads to greater success this year on the mound.

Now that you will be an upper classman, do you feel like you will have more of a leadership role on the team?

My role as a leader on the team has gradually increased each year. This year I expect to be an example for my teammates both as a competitor and as a person.

Do you have a favorite moment or game of your college career so far?

My favorite moment is from my freshman year against UNC-Charlotte when I struck out 14 batters en route to a complete game.

How did your experience in the CHS program help prepare you for the college level, and possibly, beyond?

What I learned at CHS as a baseball player, competitor, and person has helped me tremendously in my baseball career. The respect that all CHS teams have shown toward the game and the people involved in it is part of what makes it undoubtedly one of the best around. I am grateful to have been a part of such a class act program.
