Coming out of the bullpen in a pressure packed situation, Steven Rice was up to the task Saturday afternoon. The lefty reliever stepped into, and worked out of, a bases loaded jam with Vanderbilt trailing 2-1 in the fifth.
In his sixth appearance, Rice went on to log two more innings, giving up no hits, walking a pair, and striking out two San Diego batters. For the season, he has pitched 10.1 innings, walked seven, and struck out 13. He has an ERA of 3.48 and is holding opposing batters to a .225 average.
Vanderbilt managed a threat in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not push across a run, dropping the game 2-1.
The Commodores, who were Preseason ranked in the top 25, are now 5-9 heading into two mid-week games with Siena before opening the SEC portion of the schedule at Florida next Friday in Gainesville. The Gators, who have been ranked No. 1 four consecutive polls, have won eight in a row. This past weekend, Florida swept a 3-game series over the previously unbeaten Miami Hurricanes.
