Tar Heels look for right pace for bowl

The fi rst bowl game for North Carolina under coach Larry Fedora is enough to give the Tar Heels a boost in the future.    But Fedora said Monday that he doesn’t want to look too far ahead when it comes dealing directly with the next opponent.    So even though Cincinnati (9-3) will be the opposition in the Belk Bowl on Dec. 28 in Charlotte, Fedora isn’t all that concerned with the Bearcats just yet.    “You have to be careful,” he said. “That’s why we won’t start preparing for Cincinnati until later.”    Fedora, though, has plenty on the agenda prior to the game at Bank of America Stadium, where Cincinnati topped Duke in the same bowl last year.    Fedora said his coaching staff has critical recruiting to tend to during the next couple of weeks

. There also will be prebowl practices with a certain emphasis in fi nding out what the Tar Heels (6-6) will have to work with in coming years.    “We’ll prepare for the future in these early practices,” he said.    Yet it’s a veteran core on the North Carolina team that Fedora has credited with turning around a 1-5 start to the season. The Tar Heels rang up victories in fi ve consecutive games until a 27-25 loss to Coastal Division champion Duke in the regularseason fi nale.    “I’m really proud how they held this group together when we were 1-5,” Fedora said.

Fedora said the bowl in Charlotte is ideal for the Tar Heels because of the alumni and fans in that region.
