North Carolina heads to familiar setting

CHAPEL HILL —When North Carolina center Tyler Zeller shows up for today’s practice at the Greensboro Coliseum, he’ll pretty much know his way around.

“It’s not home, but it’s almost like home because we’ve been there so often,” said Zeller, a senior.

So that’s one of the conveniences of a No. 1 regional seed and the fact that Greensboro had been a pre-determined site for second- and third-round games in the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina will play Vermont on Friday afternoon.

North Carolina and Duke fans in the region will have a relatively short trek for the first weekend of games.

But no guarantees come with an atmosphere that might suggest a homecourt advantage for the Tar Heels.

“I don’t really know what a building can do for us,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “I’ve never really believed a building is that powerful.”

North Carolina has lost two of its last four games in Greensboro, falling last year to Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament final and in December 2010 to Texas.

Duke, on the other hand, has won its last 15 games in the coliseum.

For North Carolina sophomore forward Harrison Barnes, there’s another level of familiarity this week. There’s a possibility of a Sunday matchup against Creighton, which has standout Doug McDermott on the team. Barnes and McDermott were high school teammates in Ames, Iowa, playing for a team that won 53 consecutive games.

“It’d be great to see Doug again,” Barnes said, pointing out their sisters are close friends as well.
