Williams’ Stewart hits 1,000, looks for more

Times-News

When the Williams High School girls’ basketball team starts the Class 3-A state playoffs tonight, senior forward Jaylaa Stewart will be working to build on a milestone.

Stewart has scored 1,000 career points, a mark reached last week during the Mid-State 3-A Conference Tournament.

Stewart began the semifinal needing 11 points to reach 1,000. She scored her 11th and final point of the upset loss to visiting Rockingham County by making the second free throw of a two-shot opportunity with 5:54 remaining.

The Bulldogs (22-4) are the No. 2 seed in the Class 3-A Mideast Region and they’ll face visiting Orange tonight.

Twelve other area basketball teams also are scheduled to play in first-round games tonight in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state playoffs. (For a schedule of games involving area teams, see Page B5.)

Williams High School’s Jaylaa Stewart goes up for a shot this season against Southern Alamance’s Katie Boone, right. Both teams start the state playoffs with games tonight in their respective classes.
