Cowboys whip Ravens
February 6, 2014Crook County High School
Thursday night the Crook County Cowboys dominated another opponent, taking a 69-12 victory over the Ridgeview Ravens in Special District 2 wrestling action.
“It was a good team win for us,” said Crook County Head Wrestling Coach Jake Huffman following the match. “We had a couple of great pins.”
The host Ravens warmed up to the music of Aloe Blacc singing, “You can tell everybody. Go ahead and tell everybody, I’m the man. I’m the man, I’m the man.”
It didn’t take very long before it was clear that, at least on that night, it was Crook County that was the man. Cowboy heavyweight Jason Williams opened the dual with a fall just 16 seconds into his match with Cruz Christiansen, setting the tone for the entire contest. Ridgeview briefly tied the dual when Tanner Boatman pinned Jared Wheeler in the second round of their 106-pound match. However, the Cowboys then rolled off 10 consecutive victories as they cruised to the easy win.
Terran and Trayton Libolt started the onslaught with falls over Tanner Stewart and Corbin Carpenter, respectively, in their 113- and 120-pound matches. Trey Shores added to the Cowboy lead with a 16-0 technical fall over Carson Dedmon at 126-pounds to make the Cowboy lead 21-0. By the time, Brent Bannon (132), and Grayson Munn (138) received forfeits the Cowboys led 33-6 and the match was over nearly before it started.
Cole Ovens kept things rolling for the Cowboys with a 10-2 major decision over Cohen Merritt, giving the Cowboys an insurmountable 37-6 lead. Colbran Meeker (152), Tyler Berger (160), Brendan Harkey (170), and Clark Woodward (182) all earned falls, pushing the Cowboy lead to 63-6.
Ridgeview finally picked up another win when defending state champion Boomer Fleming pinned Aaron Swindle late in the first round of their 195-pound match to make the score 63-12. Swindle had volunteered to wrestle Fleming despite normally wrestling at 170 pounds.
The Ridgeview crowd was already filing out by the time Trevor Rasmussen closed out the match with one last fall. A second round pin of Connor Sperling in their 220-pound match.
“We knew that Ridgeview was an improved team and they showed that,” Huffman said. “We just had a little more experience.”
The Cowboys have one final dual meet prior to districts. The Cowboys will host the Redmond Panthers on Thursday, Feb. 6 beginning at 7 p.m.
“Tonight was a useful dual for seeding going into district,” Huffman said. “Now we just have to get ready for Redmond.”
