Classic Champions - Central Oregonian
January 21, 2014Crook County High School
The Crook County Cowboys absolutely obliterated the competition this past weekend on their way to the Class 4A team championship at the Oregon Wrestling Classic.
“I thought that everybody wrestled well,” said Crook County Head Coach Jake Huffman of his team’s performance. “It was nice to see the 4A guys and see who we needed to wrestle and how we were going to stack up with some of these teams. It’s always a good tournament to see what we are going to see at state.”
The Classic, which is considered the unofficial state dual meet championship features the top teams in the state at each classification. By the end of the weekend tournament, which was held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, the Cowboys had sent a clear message that they are the team to beat for the state championship.
Crook County rolled through Friday’s pool play knocking off Sutherlin 84-0, Banks 81-0, and North Marion 71-4.
Eight Cowboys posted perfect 3-0 records on the first day of the tournament while Crook County was a combined 38-1 in the matches they wrestled.
Saturday’s quarterfinals match with Marshfield was just as easy. The Cowboys won the dual 75-4, picking up 12 falls in the match. The Cowboys went on to win the semifinals 69-3 against Cascade, picking up eight more falls along the way. The win set up a showdown with Greater Oregon League rival La Grande for the team championship.
La Grande had a much more difficult route to the championship. After going 3-0 in pool matches on Friday, the Tigers defeated Sweet Home 47-22 in the quarterfinals, then edged Scappoose 36-28 in the semifinal round. The Tigers trailed 27-28 going into the 220-pound match. However, Micah Fuller picked up a pin at 220 and Dyllan Reece held on for a 5-4 win at 285-pounds to give La Grande the close victory.
La Grande led briefly in the championship round as Cole Rohan picked up a 7-3 decision over Terran Libolt in their 106-pound matchup.
However, the Cowboys quickly took the lead for good as Trayton Libolt pinned Corey Isaacson 1:12 into their 113-pound match to give Crook County a 6-3 lead. Kurt Mode extended the Crook County lead with a 15-2 major decision over Taran Hardwick at 120 pounds. When Brent Bannon defeated Jonathon Gonzalez 8-0 at 126 pounds, the Cowboys were rolling with a 14-3 lead. Grayson Munn extended the Cowboys’ lead with a fall over Seth Deviney at 132 pounds to make the score 20-3.
Ryder Shinkle picked up a tough 6-2 win over Ryan Middleton at 138 pounds and Colbran Meeker followed up with a 15-3 major decision over Tyler Isaacson to give the Cowboys a 27-3 lead. Falls by Tyler Berger (152) and Brendan Harkey (160) gave the Cowboys a 39-3 lead and guaranteed the Cowboys the championship with five matches left to wrestle.
Caleb Woodworth took La Grande’s second win of the championship with a 6-3 decision over Clark Woodward, but it was the last points the Tigers would score as Gunnar Robirts (182), Zach Smith (195), Trevor Rasmussen (220) all earned pins for the Cowboys. La Grande chose to forfeit the heavyweight match making the final score 63-6.
“I thought that La Grande fought pretty hard,” Huffman said. “They were the best team we wrestled. They were solid. We have a couple of guys that have things that they need to clean up, but overall it was a great team effort.”
Berger, Robirts, and Rasmussen each finished the tournament with six pins as the Cowboys amassed 61 pins as a team.
“This is the best high school team I’ve ever been on,” said Berger, who was part of two state championship teams at Hermiston before transfering to Crook County this year. “The way we train, the way we prepare for tournaments, and the way we wrestle at tournaments is at another level.”
Trayton Libolt, who had three pins in the four matches he wrestled, was also pleased with how the team performed.
“We did really good,” he said. “We were coming in hungry and we needed to make a statement. We all connect so well and we work so hard in the mat room. It was awesome.”
Although his statistics were not as impressive as some of the other Cowboys, Libolt may have had the best week of any of the Cowboy wrestlers. On Thursday he knocked off Francisco Barrerra of Ontario, the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the state at 113 pounds. Then Friday morning he upset No. 1 ranked Collin Purinton of Banks, who won last year’s state championship, 5-4.
“Libolt had a great tournament,” said Huffman.
The Cowboys host the Bend Lava Bears on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. match, then travel to Hillsboro on Friday for the Reser Tournament of Champions.
“Reser is a whole different ballgame,” Huffman said. “Bonus points matter and moving kids along in the brackets — that’s really important. We are really going to focus on that this week, and on winning the close matches.”
