November 3, 2013Crook County High School
PRINEVILLE — Crook County rolled into the Class 4A state volleyball tournament with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-17 playoff sweep over the La Salle Falcons from Milwaukie, co-runners-up in the Tri-Valley Conference, on Friday night.
The Cowgirls open their bid for an eighth consecutive state title Friday at Lane Community College in Eugene. Against La Salle, Crook County trailed early in both the first and third games.
“We missed some first serves," said Cowgirls coach Rosie Honl. “That’s something we don’t usually do, and that cost us."
But Crook County prevailed behind Hannah Troutman (20 kills, nine digs), Kathryn Kaonis (14 kills) and Karlee Hollis (nine kills). Aspen Christiansen had eight digs, and setters Kayla Hamilton and Abby Smith were credited with 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
Top servers for the Cowgirls included Hollis (12 for 12), Christiansen (10 for 10) and Jennifer Roth (12 for 13), all with one ace apiece. Troutman was 13 for 15 with a pair of aces, and Smith was 10 for 12.
The uncharacteristic missed first serves aside, Honl said, “we played pretty error-free volleyball." She added: “The girls played fantastic. I’m really, really pleased."
Crook County will play the winner of today’s playoff match between Ridgeview and Marshfield in the 4A state quarterfinals.
