Cowboys crush Hawks, Ravens - Central Oregonian

January 26, 2013
Crook County High School

It was another dominant performance by the Crook County Cowboys.

Wednesday night, the Cowboys, who are undefeated so far this year in dual meets, blanked the La Pine Hawks 78-0, then cruised past the Ridgeview Ravens 71-6.

“I can definitely say that we took care of business,” said Crook County heavyweight Jason Williams, who earned two falls on the night.

The Cowboys, who have been wrestling short-handed for the last month, are finally back at full strength and Wednesday’s performance left no doubt that the team is a force to be reckoned with.

The Hawks forfeited five weight classes to the Cowboys, putting themselves into a 30-0 deficit before a match was even contested. However, it wouldn’t have mattered as Crook County won seven of the nine contested matches by fall.

Hayden Bates (132) started things rolling for the Cowboys with a first round pin over Zach Knabe.

Wrestling in his first match since recovering from a hand injury, Colbran Meeker (138) took a little longer to get the job done. Meeker, who led 7-0 at the end of two rounds, finally pinned his opponent with five seconds left in the match.

Ryder Shinkle (145), Dean Smith (160), Aaron Swindle (170), Gunner Crawford (195), and Jason Williams (285) all pinned their opponents in the dual, while Trevor Rasmussen (220) and Trey Shores (106) earned decisions.

The Cowboys were nearly as dominant against the Ravens.

Bates started things rolling with a 17-4 major decision over Calvin Rodman. Shinkle earned his second pin of the evening moments later with a third round fall over Landon Prescott.

Then Dawson Barber took a 6-0 victory over Calixto Paniagua at 152 pounds. Smith followed up with a convincing 20-5 technical fall over Chase Wolford.

The Cowboys rolled to a 36-0 lead before the Ravens finally got on the board with their lone win of the evening. Boomer Fleming, last year’s Class 6A 160 pound state champion took a 2-0 lead in the first round, then pinned Crook County’s Dylan Blaisus late in round two of their 182 pound match.

However, from then on it was all Crook County as Rasmussen, Williams, and Shores all pinned their opponents, and Johnny Avina (120) scored a technical fall.

“Since Ridgeview is a new team we needed to have some kind of competition with them so we had some kind of seedable information for regional’s,” Huffman said. “These matches were also a benefit because it’s a way to sharpen up before going to the Reser Tournament of Champions this weekend.”

Huffman added that the Reser tournament, which starts today at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, is the most important tournament so far this year. The tournament features the top teams in Oregon across all classifications and is run in the same format as the state tournament.

“We are taking a full JV?and varsity squad,” Huffman said. “The JV?tournament is considered a varsity date too. If guys place at the JV tournament there, it’s considered as tough as any district tournament that they are going to see. It will give you a good idea how your team will do at regionals.”

Following the Reser Tournament, which concludes Saturday evening, the Cowboys are off until Thursday when they travel to Redmond to take on the Panthers in a 7 p.m. dual.

Redmond, who defeated Bend 78-3 on Wednesday, has won the dual each of the last three years, and once again has one of the top teams in the state.
