Cowgirls whip Hawks - Central Oregonain
January 13, 2013Crook County High School
Jessie Maley-Loper had the biggest game of her career as the Crook County Cowgirls rolled past the La Pine Hawks 67-58 Friday night in La Pine.
Maley-Loper finished the game with 26 points, nine steals, six assists, and five rebounds as the Cowgirls gradually pulled away for the win.
“She had a really nice game,” said CCHS head coach Dave Johnson. “It was just nice to come out and get a win right after break and it’s nice to beat another 4A team.”
Although Maley-Loper stole the show, she was not the only Cowgirl to have a big game on Friday. Kimmer Severance added 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Jena Ovens pitched in with nine points and four assists.
Holli Glenn led the Hawks with 19 points, while Katie Mickel added 14.
The Cowgirls held a narrow 20-18 lead at the end of the first period and clung to a 37-35 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, foul trouble sent several La Pine starters to the bench. The Cowgirls took advantage, outscoring the Hawks 15-10 in the period to break the game open.
Although the Cowgirls struggled from the foul line, hitting just 9-18, they made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The Cowgirls (4-5) are at home tonight when they host the Bend Lava Bears in an Intermountain Hybrid contest. Then the team goes on the road again on Friday when they travel to Redmond to take on the Panthers.
“It’s nice to finally be at home,” Johnson said. “And it’s nice for us to start our IMC?schedule.”
