Cowgirl volleyball players earn all-state honors - Central Oregonian

The honors keep pouring in for members of the Crook County High School volleyball team as they landed three players on the Class 4A all-state squad.

“I think they picked the right people,” Crook County head coach Rosie Honl said. “I was real excited for our girls. I wish more of them were on the team, but for our girls to get three out of 17 girls, that’s pretty good.”

For the third consecutive year, senior middle blocker, Makayla Lindburg, has been named OSAA Class 4A volleyball player of the year.

 “To earn that honor as a sophomore through her senior year that’s pretty impressive,” Honl said.

Lindburg led the Cowgirls in kills with 477 in just 894 attempts. She had an astounding .444 hitting percentage. Lindburg also led the Cowgirls in blocks with 45 and was second on the team in digs with 96.

 Joining Lindburg on the all-state first team is junior outside hitter Hannah Troutman, who was nearly as impressive.

The junior finished with 420 kills in 857 attempts and hit at a .354 percentage. Troutman led the team in digs with 106, and was one of the team’s toughest servers.

Although Lindburg and Troutman were the team’s two dominant players, they were not the only players to earn all-state recognition.

 Senior right-side hitter Annie Fraser was named to the all-state second team.

Fraser finished the season with 31 kills. She also contributed to the team from the service line and had possibly her best match of the season during the state finals when she finished 22 for 22 from the service line.

It is the first time that either Troutman or Fraser have earned all state recognition.

In addition to the player recognitions, CCHS head coach Rosie Honl has been named Class 4A coach of the year.

Honl has been named coach of the year multiple times, including each of the last three years. However, this time she didn’t believe that the honor should have been hers.

“My name wasn’t on the ballot,” Honl said. “It would have been nice for somebody else to have a turn at it. I voted for Debbie Dewey from Ridgeview. She took a start-up program and did a real nice job.”

Still, the recognition was not entirely unexpected.

“They usually give the coach of the year award to the state champion,” she said. “I’m not sure why they do that, but this is the second time that I have not been on the ballot and still been given the award.”

Honl quickly returned to talking about her players.

“The girls work so hard and are so mindful,” she said. “It’s so nice to see the rest of the state recognize the hard work they have put in and reward them for it.”

The Class 4A all-state team is selected by a vote of coaches throughout the state and then compiled by the Oregonian.
