Cowboys light up LaPine in season opener, 11-3 - Central Oregonian
March 17, 2012Crook County High School
The Cowboys baseball team blasted off to a 5-0 start in their home opener against La Pine Wednesday and never looked back, earning an 11-3 victory.
Pitcher Max Benton earned the victory, pitching five strikeouts in four innings with no walks. Cody Buss relieved Benton in the fifth inning with virtually no drop-off as the duo finished the game with no earned runs and one walk.
“The pitchers did outstanding,” Cowboys head coach Terry Larimer said.
The team dominated at the plate as well. Justin Cleveland led the way with a triple and a double, and Benton added another double and a single. The team scored five runs in the first and two apiece in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
“All in all, we hit pretty good all the way through the line-up,” Larimer said.
While play was good, it wasn’t perfect. The Hawks scored three runs in the third inning, but all of them came on Crook County errors.
“They weren’t bad errors,” he said. “They were thrown dropped balls – they weren’t field errors.”
Larimer was pleased with the outcome aside of the defensive lull that prompted the errors.
“Honestly, it was about what we expected,” he said. “It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t bad at all.”
Following their strong start, the road gets tougher in a hurry for Crook County who faces 6A Redmond at home today in a doubleheader.
“Those will be our toughest two games of the year,” Larimer said.
