Golf is a sport that requires not only skill, but discipline and mental toughness. For College Park’s Meaghan Coleman, her unique background and focus on academics has led to a successful high school career on the golf course.
Growing up in the United Arab Emirates, Coleman picked up the game of golf at the age of seven as she frequently visited the links with her family on the weekends.
Currently a junior on the Lady Cavs’ golf team, Coleman’s squad finished just one stroke behind The Woodlands at the District 14-5A tournament, which left her team on the outside looking in for a coveted spot in the regional tournament. However, during the second round of the district tournament, she turned in a 73 on her score card which vaulted the 5-foot-4 standout into a fourth-place finish and a slot in the Regionals as an individual qualifier.
“My ability to bounce back after having a tough hole or a tough shot has become my biggest strength,” said Coleman. “It’s taken a lot of practice but I’ve noticed a change in my emotional stability and strength which has helped my performance.”
Despite her accomplishments on the course, it could be her accomplishments in the classroom which outshine her play. As an AP student that challenges herself with college-level courses, Coleman has posted a 4.77 GPA while maintaining enough time to train and improve her golf game.
“It’s a challenge to balance school work and finding time to train at the golf course, but academics are my first priority,” Coleman says. “To get to that next level, however, I’d like to work on the overall consistency of my game.”
That balance speaks to her high-level of mental toughness as a young student-athlete and provides a bright outlook on the future as she is already garnering interest from Big East and Big 10 schools. “I’m just trying to find the school that is the best fit for me so I can play golf and get a good education,” says Coleman, who is looking to pursue a degree in math or science.
As a world traveler, a standout golfer and a bright student, Coleman has a unique outlook on life that makes her appreciate what she has in front of her. Make note of her career – she is the epitome of what it means to live life to the fullest while redefining the term student-athlete.
