The College of Central Florida women’s basketball team had its chances against rival Santa Fe College on Wednesday night.
The Patriots (9-9, 0-2), though, couldn’t make the plays late and fell 66-63 to the Saints in a Mid-Florida Conference matchup.
SFC’s Tori Baggett hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 58 seconds left as part of her 23-point night.
Following Baggett’s shot, the Patriots kept at it, but Kai Jones had her shot blocked on CF’s next possession.
After Santa Fe turned the ball over with 20 seconds left, Jones fired a 3-pointer, which missed with 14.6 seconds.
Stephanie Ball had a chance to make it a two-possession game for the Saints, but missed the front end of a one-and-one.
CF took a timeout with 8.5 seconds remaining and then went to Brittany Grant, whose 3-pointer from the top of the key glanced off the rim and over the Saints as time expired.
Jones, R’Kiyah Scott and Angelle Simon led the way for CF with 11 points each.
The Patriots trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, but closed the opening 20 minutes on an 18-3 run and led by 40-35 at halftime.
From there, CF built as much as a seven-point lead, but scored just one basket over the final 7:31 and three points total, as the Saints won for the first time in three meetings with the Patriots.
