Alumni Cardinals Help West Squad End Seven Game Losing Streak

West's Darius Johnson(19) celebrates with DeTuan Smith (25) after Smith scored a touchdown during the Ron Woyan East-West All-Star football game at Kings High School Thursday.  Tony Tribble for the Enquirer

In their final game as Cardinals, Josh Boland, Justin Myles and DeTuan Smith all played a role in the West squad defeating the East squad for the first time since 2006 by setting a record for combined points in a game, winning 63-43.

As is usually the case when they are on a football field, the Cardinals had an impact.  And as is usually the case, DeTuan Smith was at the center of it.  While published reports will talk about the show put on by Lakota West's duo of Malik Grove and Tyler Jones, our Cardinals put on quite a display themselves.

In the first quarter of play, the West squad put 29 points on the board.  DeTuan Smith scored on an 80-yard pass play from Wyoming QB Will Marty.  Another Cardinal, TE Josh Boland, completed the scoring play with catch for a 2-pt conversion to put the West squad up 22-7.

The scoring wasn't over for DeTuan (is it ever?).  Later in the 1st quarter, it was an all Northwest Local School District connection as DeTuan tossed a 21 yard TD pass to former Northwest Knight QB Cory Roberson.  Cory's Northwest teammate, Kicker Kyle Kostoff added the extra point to put the West squad on top 29-7 to end the first quarter.

During the 3rd quarter with West holding a 43-21 lead, DeTuan struck again with a 1-yd TD plunge to put the West squad up 49-21 (PAT failed).  So if you are keeping score at home, that's 3 TD's for DeTuan....one rushing, one receiving and one passing...UNBELIEVABLE!!

DeTuan wasn't done, however, as he added a 65 yd TD run in the 4th quarter to help the West secure the victory, their first in 8 tries dating back to 2006.  DeTuan finished the day 5-65 Rushing, 1-80 Receiving, 1-1 21 yds Passing and 4 Total TD's...the East didn't know what hit them!

We are so proud of the athleticism and sportsmanship our men of Colerain put on every year and yesterday was no different.  Their days of strapping on their Red and White Colerain gear may be over, but DeTuan, Justin and Josh will be Cardinals FOREVER!!

Best wishes to all three as they move on to the next phase in their lives.  We wish them well and look forward to catching up with them in the coming years.
