By keeping its composure and knocking down big shots and free throws in the fourth quarter, Colerain stunned St. Xavier 53-51 in a Division I sectional contest at Fairfield.
Senior guard Milton Davis led all scorers with 19 points while senior guard Bryan Porter added 16 points for the Cardinals. Junior forward Roderick Mills scored 18 points for St. X, which shot just 3-for-17 from beyond the arc. Colerain finished the game with just five turnovers and scored 12 points off 11 St. Xavier turnovers.
St. X, ranked No. 3 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll, found itself in a battle from the start. The Bombers trailed for much of the first half before seizing a two-point halftime lead, but Colerain wasn’t rattled.
“We had the lead until they made a run to end the half, so we just told our guys to relax and keep playing like you’ve been playing,” Colerain head coach Kevin Higgins said.
Colerain held St. X to just six points in the third quarter and with a couple of timely 3-pointers and clutch foul shots, it maintained a three-to-five point lead for much of the fourth quarter. The satisfaction from this victory will be short-lived as Colerain will face a familiar foe in Northwest on Sunday (at 3:30 PM in the Fifth Third Center on the campus of the University of Cincinnati).
