Cogs look for consistency

November 30, 2011
Genoa-Kingston High School

Like a lot of teams, Genoa-Kingston saw some things it liked and some things it didn’t in its holiday tournament.

For coach Corey Jenkins, the positives included a strong game against Rockford Christian – the team that knocked off G-K in the sectional finals last season – in the season opener and two good defensive performances to close out the tournament. The negatives came in an uninspired loss to Mendota two days after the Rockford Christian game.

“That identity is what we’re looking for,” Jenkins said. “Let’s see who we are.”

Jenkins said he did see some good play from sophomores Eli Thurlby and Sal Lopez and believes that when senior guard Andrew Oplt shoots well, as he did Saturday against Durand when he hit four three-pointers, the Cogs will find their roles easier.

“The big thing is we’ve got to find some consistency,” Jenkins said. “We can’t go out and play at the level we played at against Rockford Christian and then the next night play at the level we played at against Mendota. I don’t think we defended very well against Menodta. We responded well against Harvest Christian Academy and Durand.”
