With the score tied at 22 in the second quarter and the Cogs in need of a spark, Genoa-Kingston went on a 7-0 run to build a lead they would never relinquish and eventually defeat the Thunder 61-51 in a nonconference game. “It took us a while to get going out of the gates and usually we’re a little bit better than that,” coach Cory Jenkins said. “With our size we can’t have those starts as far as controlling the boards.” The teams traded baskets the majority of the second quarter before G-K’s run. The Cogs’ biggest lead came in the third quarter at 45-30. The Cogs got contributions up and down the roster and saw Sal Lopez return from a foot injury sustained during football season. He finished with 10 points and provided another post option for the Cogs. “We have some depth and are able to work with things and to see what’s working,” Jenkins said. Adam Price added 13 points and G-K (5-1) was led by freshman Tommy Lucca’s 19 points. “Everyone played well,” Lucca said. “We work hard so I think we’re pretty good. Hopefully we can continue this.”
