12 individuals advance to sectionals

October 9, 2009
Genoa-Kingston High School

BY STEVE NITZ -

DeKalb's boys and Genoa-Kingston's girls were the only area golf teams able to advance to sectional play, but a number of individuals were able to earn a trip to sectionals.

Hinckley-Big Rock wasn't able to advance either its boys or girls teams, but the Royals advanced one individual on each side.

Colton Craig finished second overall with an 82 in rainy and windy conditions Tuesday in the Class 1A Mendota Regional to advance, while Megan Gregg shot a 93 at the Class A Rock Falls Regional.

"As far as Colton, he did what he needed to do," Hinckley-Big Rock coach Todd Prellberg said. "We're both very excited about playing Edgebrook [Golf Course] at sectionals. We're hoping things fall into place for him. I think if he takes what the course gives him he'll be fine."

Gregg was able to move on even though she struggled with her putting.

"She was able to compensate for it and put up a real nice 93," Prellberg said. "We're very happy with the way she played."

Genoa-Kingston and Indian Creek missed qualifying for sectionals by one stroke, but G-K's Scott Suchy and Indian Creek's Alex Bremner and Blake Mitchell advanced.

Suchy had an 83 at the Class 1A Rockford Christian Life Regional while Bremner shot an 84 and Mitchell finished with an 86 at the Class 1A Mendota Regional.

"[Suchy] really should have had about a 75; he played very well," G-K coach Steve Stirlen said. "He's hitting the ball well, some of his drives were monster drives."

Kaneland's Hayley Guyton had the top score at the Class AA Belvidere North Regional with a 78.

Other individuals who advanced were Josh Schuberg, Troy Krueger, and Zach Douglas of Kaneland and Josh Reed, Jon Nugent and Drew Hawkins of Sycamore.
