With less than 10 seconds left in the first half of Friday night’s game against the Crusaders, Genoa-Kingston needed to stop Lutheran, which sat at the Cogs’ 44-yard line, from scoring or getting into field goal range.

But Roby got behind the G-K defense. When Lutheran quarterback Kendall Lawson launched a throw, all Roby did was wait, catch the ball and get to the end zone rather easily.

Roby’s catch turned a four-point Crusaders lead into an 11-point advantage. For G-K, it was all downhill from there as the Crusaders left Genoa with 56-10 victory.

The Cogs (0-2) were in the game the entire first half. Roby’s catch, which G-K coach Travis Frederick said happened because of miscommunication on the defense, seemed to break their back.

“It was a tight game. We were feeling good; we started moving the ball a little bit,” G-K coach Travis Frederick said. “That will do it every time, sure.”

For Lutheran (2-0) big plays were a theme all night. Roby’s touchdown catch was the start of a run of 42 unanswered points for the Crusauders. That run included a 75-yard touchdown catch and 44-yard touchdown run by James Robinson. Lutheran also returned two punts for touchdowns.

“There’s definitely a speed and athleticism factor [with Lutheran]. They’ve got nice talent. We told them all week that they did,” Frederick said. “We were hoping that maybe our O-line, D-line could wear theirs out and we could control the ball.”

After the Crusders opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Milbourn, who would leave the game in the first half because of injury, to Roby, the Cogs answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Eli Thurlby. Cris Camargo kicked a 29-yard field goal late in the second quarter, and that was all the scoring for the Cogs.

Sal Lopez led G-K with 84 yards rushing. Thurlby finished with 61 yards and Jose Ruiz had 17. Adam Price was 5-for-14 passing for G-K, finishing with 50 yards and an interception.
