Home » Boys' Basketball NewsCogs falter in crunch timeFebruary 22, 2012 Genoa-Kingston High SchoolGENOA – Something changes for the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team down the stretch in close games. Maybe it’s because of the Cogs’ relatively young rotation, but the Cogs seem to tighten up as the game becomes more intense. That trend continued when the Cogs’ season ended Tuesday in a 57-42, Class 2A G-K Regional quarterfinal loss to Northridge Prep. Whether they were making errant passes, playing poor defense or allowing a free-throw shooter to collect his own rebound to score, the Cogs couldn’t get anything right for the last quarter-and-a-half. G-K (11-16) committed eight turnovers during an eight-minute stretch in the second half, during which Northridge Prep scored 19 unanswered points. “We did things tonight that weren’t acceptable for us,” coach Corey Jenkins said. “We had a couple of crucial turnovers here. We had a couple of passes that just weren’t the best decisions for us.” It was the Cogs’ game to lose midway through the third quarter. G-K senior Andrew Oplt, who scored 10 points, made a layup to begin a 7-0 run at the beginning of the third quarter to break open an eight-point lead. But once again, turnovers plagued the Cogs. Northridge Prep (18-9) put together a 9-0 run in the final four minutes of the quarter, during which the G-K committed four turnovers. Oplt, the team’s leading scorer, wouldn’t score again. “We gave up second-chance points, and we tried to pound the post because we thought we could win that area, but we didn’t do it,” Jenkins said. Like they had in previous games, the Cogs started off slow, conceding an open layup 15 seconds into the game. Northridge Prep led for most of the quarter, but Genoa-Kingston battled back with a 15-7 run. The score was tied 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. The Cogs began the second quarter with a 11-4 run. Things turned sour quickly when G-K committed four turnovers in the final three minutes of the half, and Northridge Prep senior Mike Leazer scored seven points to spark an 8-0 run to close out the half. Leazer scored 14 points in the first half to keep Northridge Prep within one point. Last season, the Cogs made a run to the sectional championship game after closing out the regular season with a similar record. This year, the Cogs simply weren’t able to correct the mistakes that hurt them throughout the year. “We just didn’t execute well down the stretch,” Jenkins said. “Tonight’s game was a perfect replica of our season, an up-and-down roller coaster. It was just consistency, we didn’t have it.” Last season, the Cogs made a run to the sectional championship game after closing out the regular season with a similar record.
