Columbus cross country boys place ninth in Nike Nationals

December 4, 2011
Columbus North High School

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Senior Michael Sublette placed 41st Saturday (Dec. 3) to lead the Columbus Cross Country Club boys to a ninth-place finish in the Nike Cross Nationals.
Comprised entirely of students from Columbus North High School, the CCCC squad was trying to improve on a third-place showing in the 2010 nationals. This time, however, they totaled 268 points, well behind the winning total of 91 by Lincroft Cross Country Club, athletes from Christian Brothers Academy of New Jersey.
Carroll Cross Country Club of South Lake, Texas, was second with 95 points, followed by Davis Cross Country Club of Utah (157), Arcadia Cross Country Club of California (183) and Palatine Cross Country Club of Illinois (255).
American Fork Cross Country Club of Utah was sixth with 257 points followed by North Spokane Cross Country Club or Washington (259) and Hartland Cross Country Club of Wisconsin (261).
"When you look at the list of teams around us, we were right in the mix," Columbus coach Rick Weinheimer said. "It was so close from fifth to ninth with just 13 points of separation. We would like to have found 13 points, but we did a solid job. I'm very proud of how we did."
Sublette paced the Columbus effort in 15 minutes, 58 seconds for the 5,000-meter course at Portland Meadows, a horse race track set for the event. Senior Christopher Kelsey was second among the Columbus contingent. He placed 52nd in 16:03, while senior Andrew Diehn was 92nd in 16:26.
Senior David Powell was 120th in 16:38, while sophomore Kaden Eaton was 147th in 16:52. Completing the lineup for Columbus was junior Karson Tays, 153rd in 16:54, and junior Bryce Nystrom, 186th in 17:34.
Weinheimer praised several of the Columbus runners for their performances.
"It's a little hard to separate," he said. "Kelsey, Sublette, Powell and Eaton all ran well."
Futsum Zeinasellassie, a senior from Indianapolis North Central, was the individual champion. He covered the course in 15:03. Sarah Baxter of the Simi Valley (Calif.) Cross Country Club was the girls individual winner. She prevailed in 17:38.
Manlius Cross Country Club of New York won the girls team title with 60 points. Carmel (Ind.) was fifth with 195 points. The Greyhounds were paced by senior Renee Wellman, who finished 59th in 18:53.
"Looking at everything, it was a great day for Indiana cross country," Weinheimer said.
