Columbus North boys win, girls second in cross country semistate

      CARMEL, Ind. -- Seniors Michael Sublette, Christopher Kelsey and Andrew Diehn all placed in the top 10 Saturday (Oct. 22) to lead the No. 1 Columbus North boys cross country team to the championship of the Carmel Semistate at Northview Christian Church.
      Sublette placed third over the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 32.4 seconds as the Bull Dogs totaled 47 points to outrun No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern (56), No. 4 Carmel (103), No. 6 Zionsville (104), No. 7 North Central (117) and No. 8 Lawrence Central (139). Kelsey was sixth in 15:39.9, and Diehn placed 10th in 15:44.8.
      The semistate title is the eighth for the CN boys, and they seek their third consecutive state championship next Saturday (Oct. 29) at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.
      The second-ranked Columbus North girls also earned a trip to state, placing second to No. 1 Carmel. The Bull Dogs totaled 123 points to the Greyhounds' 34. CN sophomore Mackenzie Caldwell was runner-up in the individual competition in 18:19.0, 3.8 seconds behind Carmel senior Renee Wellman.
      In the boys race, senior David Powell was 20th in 16:08.7 and junior Karson Tays placed 23rd in 16:13.1 to completed the CN scorers. Sophomore Kaden Eaton (36th in 16:30.1) and junior Josh Beiriger (118th in 17:48.6) rounded out the lineup.
      No. 9 Franklin Central (177), No. 20 Brownsburg (288) and Center Grove (288) all were unable to qualify to the state meet. North Central senior Futsum Zeinasellassie was the individual winner in 15:06.9.
      For the girls, Columbus North junior Rachael Sollman and seniors Erin Shuffett, Macey Thornburg and MacKenzie Harris provided support for Caldwell.
      Sollman placed 10th in 18:53.4, while Shuffett was 30th in 19:28.6. Thornburg came in 39th in 19:46.2, and Harris was 55th in 20:03.7. Seniors Laurel Wolfe and Jaclyn Gill completed the CN lineup, placing 72nd in 20:24.4 and 104th in 21:36.7, respectively.
      In the team standings, No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern was third with 138 points followed by No. 10 Westfield (145), No. 6 Avon (156) and No. 9 Center Grove (164). Those not qualifying for state were No. 4 Franklin Central (165) and No. 8 Noblesville (184).
