September 24, 2011Columbus North High School
MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- Allie Smith shot an 84 on Saturday (Sept. 24) in the Martinsville Regional, and the Columbus North senior did not qualify for the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals.
The top three teams plus top three individuals not on qualifying teams earn spots in the state meet, set next Friday (Sept. 30) and Saturday (Oct. 1) at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
"Generally, Allie shot the ball well and she mostly was fairway to green except for two holes where she hit some sand," CN assistant coach Brett White said. "She would like to have putted better, but she was very steady other than her putting."
Center Grove won the team crown with a 340 at the FoxCliff Golf Club. Host Martinsville was second with a 346. Bloomington North placed third with a 360, taking the spot from Terre Haute North on a fifth-player tie-breaker.
Seymour's Paxton DeHaven claimed medalist honors with a 3-over-par 75. Madison's Amanda Detmer shot an 81 and Terre Haute South's Morgan Patterson an 83 to grab the other two individual spots for the state meet.
Smith -- who shot a 42-42 -- has a final average for nine 18-hole rounds this fall is 83.44 with a best round of 78 at the Oldenburg Invitational on Aug. 6. She also averaged 41.72 for 11 nine-hole rounds, the best being a 37 on Aug. 23 at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour.
The Columbus North team completed its season as Conference Indiana champion with five players -- Smith, senior Jaewon Jung, junior Emily Morris, sophomore Samantha McQueen and freshman Sydney Anderson -- all earning all-conference honors.
The squad also won the Oldenburg Invitational, placed second in the Greensburg Invitational and was fourth in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational, Columbus East Invitational and Bloomington North Sectional. In addition, the Bull Dogs went 8-2 in varsity dual matches.
