The Bull Dogs improved to 16-8 with the wins heading into their regular-season finale at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 24) at Bedford North Lawrence. Ayres struck out 14, walked three and never let a ball out of the infield in his gem, which came in the opener against the visiting Spartans at Clifty Park. The Bull Dogs relieved any stress quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second in staking the left-hander to a lead he would not surrender. Juniors C.J. Dennis and Braden Pelley led a 12-hit opening game attack as they both went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Dennis Brumfield went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior Hunter McIntosh went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Also, senior Will Nelson was 1-for-1 with a triple and junior Preston Shelton was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sophomore Coleden Hoeltke opened the game with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on a McIntosh single. Dennis drove home Hoeltke with a single, and Pelley then singled in McIntosh. Shelton followed with another RBI single, and Brumfield added an RBI on a fielder's choice. Ayres (5-2), meanwhile, struck out five in a row and "just dominated," according to Columbus North assistant coach Trevor Baty. Ayres induced ground-ball double plays following two of his walks. In the second game, junior Parker Shelton was nearly as effective in a two-hit shutout win. He struck out three and walked four to improve to 3-1. At the plate, Dennis and Pelley each had doubles and every Columbus North hitter had at least one hit in a 13-hit attack. The Bull Dogs again got on the board quickly, producing five hits in a row in the first for a 3-0 edge. McIntosh began the rally with a two-out single and Dennis followed with an RBI double. Pelley then doubled Dennis home, and Preston Shelton followed with an RBI single. CN added three more runs in the fifth on five more singles. Hoeltke opened that burst with a single, and Dennis and Pelley followed with singles to load the bases. Preston Shelton and senior Blake Lane then added consecutive singles to spark the three-run salvo. Robby Keegan and Trae Newkam collected the two hits for Connersville.
