Burton notches 300th win as Columbus North tops Whiteland in softball
April 6, 2011Columbus North High School
The triumph was career win No. 300 for Burton, who is in his second season with the Bull Dogs and his 20th year as a high school softball head coach. He previously coached for 16 seasons at Columbus East (1991-2006) and two years at Jennings County (2008 and 2009) before taking over the Columbus North program in 2010.
"It's awfully nice," Burton said of the milestone win. "I usually want the focus to be on the players, but I did have them sign a ball for me. It's something I will remember."
Caudill, junior Sydnee Jackson, sophomore Shelby Lucas, junior Emily Scheidt and freshman Shannah Hercamp each had two hits to pace a 13-hit attack for the Bull Dogs. Hercamp, Harney and Scheidt each had two RBIs.
The hosts jumped to an early 4-0 lead, withstood a Whiteland rally and then pulled away to improve to 2-0 for the young season. Freshman Grayson Harney contributed a pinch-hit two-run single to help the Bull Dogs seal the decision.
Freshman Molly Crowe pitched a complete game to pick up her second win of the season. She struck out three and walked just one.
Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Thursday (April 7) when it visits Shelbyville. The Bull Dogs follow by playing Saturday (April 9) in the Pendleton Heights Invitational. Games there begin at 9 a.m., and CN opens play in the event at 10 a.m. against Lake Central.
