Heritage Christian volleyball defeats Columbus North 3-0

August 29, 2014
Columbus North High School

INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Makinsey Summa knocked down eight kills and sophomore Imani Guy notched seven Thursday evening (Aug. 28), but the Columbus North volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at Heritage Christian.
Senior Janelle Peters added six kills and junior Avery Wendel chipped in four kills for the Bull Dogs, but the host Eagles (4-1) posted a 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 victory.
Senior Karen Wildemann contributed four service aces and 24 assists, while senior Alexa Pelley, senior Hannah Vittorio and junior Grace Sonderman each pin-pointed one ace for Columbus North (4-2).
Defensively, Pelley produced a team-best 15 digs while Sonderman had eight digs. Summa led the front-line defense with three blocks. Guy tallied two blocks, while Wildemann, Peters, Wendel and sophomore Maliah Howard-Bass each had one block.
"The varsity started off slow but competed in Games 2 and 3," CN coach Caitlin Greiner said. "Maliah was back for the first time since her injury (in the season-opener against Shelbyville) and have us a big lift blocking at the right-front position.
"I also thought our defense did a great job digging up hard-hit balls as well as tips. Imani continues to get better every day and her stats are starting to reflect that.
"Cutting down on our unforced errors ultimately would have caused a different outcome in that match."
For Heritage Christian, senior Peyton Fallis recorded 10 kills while classmates Shelby Henry and Emily Hill each had eight kills. Senior Courtney Costlow dealt 28 assists with five service aces. Fallis and senior Ball Cassidy each had 14 digs.
Columbus North rallied to win the JV match 21-25, 25-20, 15-12. Junior Olivia Teague ripped 13 kills, while junior Hannah McKinney collected 23 assists. Sophomore Mackenzie Rooks posted a team-high 13 digs.
There was no C Team match.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 2) when it visits Bloomington North. JV and C Team matches begin at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7 p.m.
