Argueta-Ventura leads Columbus North JV football to victory

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Sam Argueta-Ventura ran for three touchdowns Saturday (Aug. 23), leading the Columbus North JV football team to a 34-0 victory over Plainfield at Max Andress Field.
Argueta-Ventura scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 8 yards and 4 yards as the Bull Dogs jumped to a quick lead. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Payne passed for two touchdowns in the second quarter, the first covering 5 yards to junior Collin Hatchett and the second a 44-yarder to sophomore Kyle Jaral.
Argueta-Ventura closed the scoring for CN with a 3-yard TD in the third quarter, while junior Wyatt Barkes converted 4-of-5 extra-point kicks.
Junior Lenny Cuatzo was the defensive star. He recorded two fumble recoveries and an interception, the pick preserving the Bull Dogs' shutout in the fourth quarter.
At Plainfield, Columbus North completed a sweep of the Quakers with a 28-16 victory in the freshman game.
Wesley Barkes and Cortez Bandy each scored two touchdowns to lead the freshman squad. Barkes scored on a 35-yard run and an 80-yard kick return. Bandy found the end zone on TD runs of 10 and 20 yards.
Damon Hunter had an interception for a defensive highlight. Also, Cortez Villa and Tyler Thomas each recovered a fumble for the Bull Dogs.
Columbus North football faces rival Columbus East next week. The varsity hosts East at 7 p.m. Friday (Aug. 29). The freshmen play at East at 10 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 30). The JV plays at East at noon Saturday (Aug. 30).
