Columbus North tops Plainfield 28-13 in football opener
August 23, 2014Columbus North High School
PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- Junior Tyler Wang ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns Friday night (Aug. 22), leading the Columbus North football team to a 28-13 victory over Plainfield in the season-opening game for both schools.
Junior quarterback Mitchell Kelley accounted for 212 yards of offense and a 42-yard scoring run for the Bull Dogs, who overcame an early 7-0 deficit and ultimately outgained their hosts 375-202.
Senior Jonathan Byers produced the other TD for Columbus North, scoring on a 3-yard burst late in the second quarter to give the visitors a 21-7 lead at intermission.
"Tyler has a good burst, and he hits the hole with explosivness," Columbus North coach Tim Bless said of Wang. "And Mitchell (Kelley), he kept the chains moving and played a clean game. We were pleased with how he played."
Bless also praised the Bull Dogs' offensive line.
"Plainfield had some big guys, so it was mass on mass," the coach said. "At times, it was not easy. But over time, our guys were able to get the job done and I was glad to see them prevail."
Senior Tristan Southwood ran for 50 yards on seven carries for the Quakers, Junior quarterback Colin Nysewander threw for 97 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to junior Zach Archer on the game's first possession.
The Columbus North defense -- led by linebackers Jacob Hamblin, Brice McDaniel and Sean Dasovich -- stiffened after that opening drive. Plainfield didn't put together another good drive until late in the fourth quarter when senior John Finch capped a 58-yard march with a 5-yard TD run.
Of note, the CN defense forced Plainfield into seven punts and an eighth punting situation that resulted in a bad snap and fumble that resulted in a Bull Dogs' touchdown. The Quakers had four three-and-out possessions and no possession longer than seven plays.
"We told our linebackers coming in that this would be a game for them, they way Plainfield lines up two backs and tries to run downhill," Bless said. "Our guys stepped up to the physicality of the game, and our defensive linemen also did an excellent job of holding their space and clogging any running lanes."
Kelley scored the first TD for the Bull Dogs, scooting 42 yards up the middle on a read-option with 1:03 to go in the first quarter.
Columbus North took advantage of a poor punt snap and a Dasovich fumble recovery to take the lead. McDaniel forced the fumble, and Dasovich returned it to the Quakers' 5. One play later, Wang ran over the right side for a 5-yard score.
After the CN defense forced a three-and-out series, the Bull Dogs extended their lead with a 56-yard drive. Kelley's 9-yard sneak on a third-and-1 and a Kelley 14-yard gain on a quarterback draw keyed the drive. Byers finished the possession with his 3-yard plunge with 4:52 left in the half.
Neither team found the end zone in the third quarter, but Columbus North put the game out of reach with an eight-play, 69-yard drive in the fourth quarter. A 40-yard, Kelley-to-Clay Roberts pass keyed the possession that Wang finished by going wide right for an 8-yard touchdown.
Columbus North improved its series record to 7-3 over Plainfield with the decision. Columbus High was 6-2 against the Quakers in the 1930s and 1940s prior to Plainfield's 34-32 victory last season.
The Bull Dogs host Columbus East at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 29) in the annual rivalry game. Plainfield faces Danville at 5:20 p.m. next Saturday (Aug. 30) in Lucas Oil Stadium.
