Columbus North High School

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Byron Barger scored in the 48th minute Tuesday evening (Aug. 19), helping the Class 2A No. 4 Columbus North boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over East Central at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
In the season opener for both teams, Barger broke a scoreless tie in the eighth minute of the second half when he converted an opportunity that was started by senior teammate Vince Grana.
Barger had one other apparent goal, but that header was negated on an offsides call.
With help from a strong defensive cast, junior Ty Bentham made three saves and played all 80 minutes in goal to post a shutout for Columbus North.
At the JV level, the Bull Dogs prevailed 5-1.
Columbus North returns to action next Thursday (Aug. 28) when it faces Cathedral at Lawrence Park. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7 p.m.
