Columbus North outscores Greenwood in football scrimmage

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Tyler Wang ran for three touchdowns and sophomore backup Triston Perry threw for three more Friday night (Aug. 15), leading the Columbus North football team in a scrimmage against Greenwood at Max Andress Field.
Although no score was kept, the Bull Dogs crossed the Greenwood goal line seven times -- four times on runs and three times via pass plays -- in the five-segment scrimmage which included three periods with varsity players and two periods with JV players.
The visiting Woodmen tallied three touchdowns -- two on passing plays and one on a run.
For the entire scrimmage, CN totaled 339 yards of offense on 47 plays -- 181 yards on 28 running plays and 158 yards on 12-of-19 passing. Greenwood countered with 288 yards on 46 plays -- 160 yards on 29 rushes plus 128 yards on 8-of-17 passing.
Wang opened the scoring with a 9-yard run over the left side in the first segment, while senior Jonathan Byers and Wang tallied respective TD runs of 10 yards and 3 yards in the second segment.
Wang notched another 3-yard TD burst in the third segment, while Perry tossed three scoring passes over the final two segments. The first covered 3 yards to junior Bryce Ables. The second was a 35-yard strike to junior Wyatt Barkes. The final score was a 28-yarder to junior Mitchell Essex.
Greenwood scored once each in the second, third and fourth segments. The first two TDs came on TDs passes from senior Tanner Skeel, a 10-yarder to junior Jackson Daugherty and a 35-yarder to sophomore Dylan Rosado. The Woodmen's final score was a 35-yard by sophomore quarterback A.J. Reingardt.
Kelley paced Columbus North rushers with 50 yards on seven carries while also completing 7-of-12 passes for 76 yards. Wang ran for 33 yards on 10 carries, while Byers netted 21 yards on three carries. Junior Sam Argueta-Ventura added 22 yards on four carries during the JV segments.
Junior Alex Algee paced the varsity receivers with two catches for 44 yards, while Barkes had two catches for 44 yards and a TD. Senior Clay Roberts notched two catches for 29 yards, while Essex had the one catch for 28 yards.
The Columbus North defense came up with four takeaways -- three fumble recoveries and an interception. Senior Jacob Hamblin, junior Drew Schoeberl and sophomore Evan Linville made fumble recoveries. Hamblin rambled 19 yards on his fumble return. Sophomore Chad Genth made an interception in the fourth segment with an 11-yard return.
For Greenwood, Skeel completed 8-of-14 passes for 128 yards. He also ran for 18 yards on four carries. Rosado had three receptions for 61 yards, while Daugherty made three catches for 60 yards. Junior John Gallman paced the Woodmen ground game with 47 yards on nine carries. Freshman Brandon Rosado covered 36 yards on seven carries.
Columbus North opens its season at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 22) when it visits Plainfield. Greenwood opens at 7 p.m. next Friday (Aug. 22) when it hosts Perry Meridian.
